Email Linked Free Web Space

(This page was last updated on the 02/01/2024)

In a time before social media, many people used the free web space linked to their e-mail addresses and their Internet Service Provider, to upload family details & photos and run club websites etc, and as these were different days many people were more unguarded in the content they posted and as such this may still be a useful investigative technique to know about, even if rarely used.

So an example of free web space linked to an email address is as follows, with the *** taking place of the usual Account / Screen Name area of the email address;

     ***@talktalk.net   -   http://www.***.talktalk.net/
     ***@virgin.net   -   http://freespace.virgin.net/***/
     ***@ntlworld.com   -   http://homepage.ntlworld.com/***/

Whilst these sites may no longer be in use, with many of the Internet Service Providers no longer trading or having changed names, many of these sites are still accessible via archive sites such as at archive.org. It is often just a matter or knowing how an ISP's free web space was set out and then adding the Account / Screen Name from the email address that you have and adding that to sites like archive, such as at;

     https://web.archive.org/web/20240000000000*/http://***.talktalk.net/
     https://web.archive.org/web/20240000000000*/http://freespace.virgin.net/***.***/
     https://web.archive.org/web/20240000000000*/http://homepage.ntlworld.com/***.***/

Below are a number of useful links with the URL's of where the most popular ISP's in UK & Ireland had their free web space. You just have to Right Click on the link to "Copy Link" and replace SCREENNAME in the URL with the actual Account / Screen Name from the email address of your subject, then search it on www.archive.org.

http://hometown.aol.com/SCREENNAME    http://www.SCREENNAME.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk    http://SCREENNAME.users.btopenworld.com/    http://home.clara.net/SCREENNAME/    http://homepage.eircom.net/SCREENNAME

http://SCREENNAME.mysite.freeserve-members.co.uk    http://mysite.freeserve.co.uk/SCREENNAME    http://homepage.ntlworld.com/SCREENNAME    http://www.SCREENNAME.talktalk.net    http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/SCREENNAME

http://freespace.virgin.net/SCREENNAME    http://SCREENNAME.mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk    http://mysite.wanadoo.co.uk/SCREENNAME

If the subject you are researching / investigating has an email address for a different ISP, then a Google search within the domain name from the email address along with phrases such as "free web space" OR "homepage" OR "home" will usually locate how that ISP or email provider sets out their free web space.
